About Us
The Wilderness Sled Dog Racing Association brings the excitement of sled dog racing to Maine’s Moosehead Lake Region, with trails that stretch into the remote 100-Mile Wilderness and offer breathtaking views for spectators. As one of only two long-distance races in New England, our 60- and 35-mile events have become favorites among mushers for their friendly community, excellent organization, and challenging trails.
Our Mission
The mission of the Wilderness Sled Dog Racing Association is to foster international sports competition and to preserve the heritage of the sled dog by providing the opportunity for sled dog racing enthusiasts to engage in annual competition emphasizing the safety, animal welfare and good sportsmanship of all participants.

Our History
2005
A 100-mile race set out from the Katahdin parking lot, moving to the Inland Fisheries & Wildlife on Moosehead Lake.
2023
We’ve added even more action with a 4-mile sprint race for 3– or 4-dog teams and a fast-paced skijor race for 1–2 dogs. With teams finishing throughout Saturday afternoon, the Wilderness Sled Dog Race is an action-packed, can’t-miss winter tradition for mushers, volunteers, and spectators alike.
2004
The Wilderness Sled Dog Racing Association started with a 30-mile race on Greenville Junction trails in 2004.
2010
Wilderness becomes a nonprofit and brings back the 30-mile race. Races moved to Leisure Life Resort, where the 70- and 30-mile events became the new standard after the closure of the Medawisla camps, a former checkpoint for the 100-miler.
